What Is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a complex three-dimensional deformity of the spinal column that causes structural changes in the three planes of the spine (frontal, sagittal and transverse plane) and may occur in all vertebral segments.

In the sagittal plane the physiological curves (kyphosis and lordosis) are changed, with an increase or decrease in kyphotic or lordotic curvature depending on the type of scoliosis present. What are the signs of scoliosis and what should parents look for;

  • The side deviations of the spine,
  • Prominent ribs or shoulderblade at one side,
  • Uneven shoulder and hip lines,
  • Uneven waist lines,
  • Shortness of breath (severe curves above 70-80 degree) is an important sign,
  • Clothes that worn before without folds, becomes folds and do not fit anymore

Schroth Method

The first steps were recorded back in 1921, by Katharina Schroth, who suffered from scoliosis herself. She started to develop the method in Meissen, Eastern Germany, where she had her first small institute. During the 1930s and 1940s, Katharina received support in work and development of the method from her daughter Christa, who was born in 1924. Katharina moved with her daughter Christa to Bad Sobernheim in 1961. This is the town where they founded their institute which gradually developed into a well-established clinic, officially opened in 1983 under the name “Katharina Schroth Klinik”. After Katharina’s death in 1985, her daughter Christa Lehnert-Schroth, therapist, continued with the development of the method. Later on, her son, Hans Rudolf Weiss, orthopedic surgeon, joined her. Dr. Weiss was the director of the clinic during the period from 1995 to 2008. The further development of the method was developed mainly by the head of the therapeutic department Udo Roevenich and Axel Hennes and scientifically proven by Dr. Weiss. Christa was retired since 1995 and died in March 2015.

(Scientific Exercise Approach to Scoliosis)

SEAS is an individualized exercise program adapted to all situations of conservative treatment of scoliosis: stand-alone in low-medium degree curves during growth to reduce the risk of bracing; complimentary to bracing in medium-high degree curves during growth, with the aim to increase correction, prepare weaning, and avoid/reduce side-effects; for adults either progressing or fused, to help stabilising the curve and reduce disability.

SEAS is based on a specific active self-correction technique performed without external aid, and incorporated in functional exercises. Evaluation tests guide the choice of the exercises most appropriate to the individual patient.

Improvement of the stability of the spine in active self-correction is the primary objective of SEAS.

SEAS exercises train neuromotor function so to stimulate by reflex a self-corrected posture during the activities of daily life.

(Functional Individual Therapy of Scoliosis - Skolyoz Fonksiyonel Kişisel Tedavisi)

FITS method was created in 2004 in order to treat children with wrong posture, scoliosis and Scheuermann disease. The method was formed basing on many physiotherapeutical methods, whose techniques which the authors found useful were selected. Some of them were modified and customised to work with children.

The general goals of the therapy include the scoliosis stabilisation in children with a general flaccidity of the connective tissue or decreasing of the curvature angle in non-progressive scolioses or with an angle smaller than 30 degrees in children with correct muscle tension. Another general goal is to improve the clinical condition of a patient with a huge scoliosis whose parents are for some reason against a surgery. A general goal is also to make the scoliosis flexible in order to achieve a better correction during the surgical operation or correct the pectoral or pelvic girdle as well as to position head and neck, to improve breathing functions, patient's general fitness and efficiency after the surgery.

FITS concept consists of 3 stages:

  • Stage I. Examination of patient using classical clinical assessment, but also in terms of using FITS approach.
  • Stage II. Preparation for 3D correction. Detection and elimination of myofascial restrictions which limit a three plane corrective movement by using different techniques of myofascial relaxation
  • Stage III. Three-dimensional correction - building and stabilisation of new corrective posture patterns in functional positions, instructing the corrective tension
